90-Year-Old Man Bikes 10.5 Miles Every Day To Visit His Wife In Hospice

We will sometimes go to great lengths for those we love. Perhaps we may even step outside our comfort zone, and nobody knows this better than Peter Burkhardt.

According to Goalcast, Peter lives in the Netherlands and visits his wife daily by taking his bike and traveling 10.5 miles. That really isn’t much of a feat until you learn that Peter is 90 years old and his wife of 63 years is in hospice.

Although he bikes most days, there are times when the weather just doesn’t allow him to do so. His children will take him to see his wife, or he may take a cab, but most of the time, you will see him on his bike as he rides across town.

Overall, he cycles for about an hour to get there and an hour to get back. It may take a little longer if he has to ride into the wind.

You can often see him out riding his bike in the cold months, wearing a blue ski suit and a body warmer with a white cap. According to his story shared on Reddit, he claims the cold weather doesn’t bother him, and you can always put on a rain jacket.

He is more than familiar with the route because he has been traveling it for the past seven years. He simply says that he will always get to his wife, and you just have to take the situation as it is.

At one time, Peter would go to visit his wife by driving, but he was still alternate with the trike. These days, he can’t drive because his license wasn’t approved for renewal. Riding his tricycle is the best way to get there. He walks less now, but he feels the cycling is going well.

Burkhardt is well aware of what it takes to get to his wife every day. For his wife, however, it’s just a visit and she doesn’t comprehend what he went through to get there.

According to UpWorthy, he said: “It is completely outside her realm of experience. But when I’m back, I notice that she gives me a very nice hug every now and then.”

He feels safe while on his bike to see his wife, but he still wishes they would make some improvements here and there. His children would like him to continue seeing their mother every day, hoping he inspires others with his dedication.

In the end, it’s all about spending as much time with the one that you love. He said: “I want to see her, hear her voice. When I enter the nursing home I immediately know where she is. She is no longer the same as she was.”
