Special Olympian Has Overcome Obstacles & Finds Confidence Through Sports

Adam San Miguel has worked for Lennar Homes for 17 years and is adored by all of his coworkers. Although he seems confident when you meet him now, he has overcome many obstacles to get there.

The Special Olympics has helped open so many doors for San Miguel, who lives with both physical and intellectual disabilities.

When San Miguel was in high school, one of his physical education teachers introduced him to Special Olympics Unified Sports.

Special Olympics is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. They join people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team, which helps lead to friendship and understanding.

Their goal is to break down stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities and to empower those with and without disabilities to engage through the power of sports.

Now at 42 years old, San Miguel competes in golf, volleyball and tennis.

He has served as a global messenger and has met lawmakers in Washington D.C.

Amy Floyd has worked with San Miguel for years to help improve his speech and overall confidence. She has helped him realize that his voice is important and that people do care what he has to say.

“It’s a huge difference,” San Miguel says about his confidence now compared to 25 years ago. “If I have something to say or have an opinion about something, I’m not afraid to talk about it or to give it.”
