Alabama Farmer Quietly Donates To Pharmacy To Help People Pay For Meds

For nearly a decade, an Alabama farmer remained anonymous as he donated thousands of dollars to help people pay for medicine at a local pharmacy in the town of Geraldine.

According to WVTM 13, Hody Childress walked into Geraldine Drugs one day and asked if customers ever had to turn down medication because of the cost.

The pharmacist, Brooke Walker, said that people absolutely left without medicine over money, so Hody pulled out his wallet and offered Walker $100 to help “anyone who can’t afford their prescription.”

He added, “Do not tell a soul that the money came from me. Tell them it’s a blessing from God.”

The ritual continued month after month for years, stretching into nearly a decade. The whole time, not a single soul knew what Hody was doing outside of the pharmacist.

When Childress reached 80 years of age, his health started declining and he realized he needed to tell someone about his $100/month so they could continue it. He ended up sharing his secret with his daughter, Tania Nix.

Hody sadly passed away on January 1, 2023, but his good deeds were remembered thanks to Tania who shared the story during his funeral.

Hody’s niece, Ashley Darnell Sargent, took to Facebook to share about the kind thing her uncle had done. In the post, Ashley explained that Hody’s money had gone to help people from all walks of life from single parents to children and people escaping domestic violence. The money was used for life-saving medication and antibiotics that customers simply couldn’t afford on their own.

Ashely spoke with Walker who said, “Hody was not just a good man. He was a great man. I wish I had told him how much he meant to me…how much his actions and faith affected my life…and how blessed I was to know him.”
