With the ups and downs life gives you, it’s definitely like a roller coaster. Life will provide us some excitement, taking us up into the clouds. Those are the days we want to experience the most. Then you drop back to the ground. That high we experienced is no longer there. You manage your days and nights like you normally would. Unfortunately, life suddenly throws you a curveball sending that roller coaster plummeting. It seems as if you’ll never make it to even ground again, but you slowly work your way there.
Cancer is like life’s roller coasters. As soon as you receive your diagnosis, your life gets flipped upside down. You have multiple months full of surgeries and treatments. Your physical well-being is stretched to its limits. Your mental and emotional state is ready to break. It’s hard to look at life in an optimistic manner when you are so sick and tired of being sick and tired. You know there’s an end in sight, but looking that far into the future is hard when you have to focus on one day at a time. Sometimes you just have to hang on and ride it out until things level out again.
When you hit a cancer milestone, you experience those highs the roller coaster offers. Being able to lift your arms over your head again. The end of chemotherapy or your radiation treatments. Walking out of your oncology appointment with no news (which, of course, equals good news.) Annual celebrations of being cancer free. Those are all highs we like to take in and enjoy. Those are the ups that send us to the clouds for a few minutes, days, or weeks.
What’s even more important are your highs when you realize, “I get to experience this because I am here.” We wouldn’t truly know how to appreciate life if we didn’t experience the roller coaster lows. The little miracles that we see on a daily basis like the newborn babies we welcome into our world, the child who is thrilled she lost her first tooth, or the spouse who looks at you lovingly are the moments that help us climb out of those lows.
“Life is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs. But, it’s your choice to scream or enjoy the ride.” ~Unknown
