Many of you may ask, “Who is this Angela person and what is she doing here?” Well, I am here to tell you I am a survivor! My cancer story could be considered extensive, but then again, it doesn’t only involve me.
My first encounter with breast cancer was when my maternal grandmother was diagnosed at the age of 51. I may not remember this fight, but I know it had a huge impact on my life. She has fought a hard battle her whole life, with a more recent fourth breast cancer diagnosis this last December. That’s right, I said four. Talk about perseverance.
Nine short years after my grandmother’s initial diagnosis, my mother was given the news that at the age of 40 she would start battling breast cancer too. Only in elementary school, this was a shock to my system and turned my world upside down. I always felt my mom is a fighter and she has proven me correct. She has experienced two cancers since then with a second bout of breast cancer at 55 years old. My grandma has raised a fighter, that’s for sure!
My story continues with my own breast cancer diagnosis the month I turned 33 years old in 2012. Just a year later, my sister received her diagnosis at the age of 37. This made the two of us third generation breast cancer survivors. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I am proud to be a third generation survivor. Why? Because we not only are fighting for us, but now we want to fight for our daughters. It has definitely given my sister and me drive.
My story not only involves my breast cancer story, but the stories of those I love most. We each have our own experiences, each different from the next. These hurdles in our lives make up who we are today. Many may ask who I am. I’m not only a mother, a wife, a daughter, or a sister, I’m a survivor, a caregiver, a supporter, and a fighter.
