Woman Donates 500 Care Packages To Breast Cancer Patients

Breast cancer is no stranger to Shondra Smith, who has unfortunately watched multiple family members battle the disease.

Her mom had stage three breast cancer, which spread to her bladder. She sadly passed away from it at the age of 70. Smith’s niece, 37-year-old Verazonda Walker, was also diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer and is now on her first round of chemotherapy with 12 more to go.

To get through these hard days, Walker has been documenting her breast cancer journey on Facebook and YouTube.

Walker’s diagnosis brought back memories for Smith from when her mom was fighting the same thing. She decided she wanted to do something nice for others who are battling this horrible cancer, in honor of her mom and to support her niece.

Although she’s been living at a hotel after she was displaced by Hurricane Ida, the Covington, Louisiana woman didn’t let that stop her from doing some good deeds.

She is giving away 500 care packages to breast cancer patients, filled with skin care products and other goodies.

Since chemotherapy causes skin changes, Smith wanted to provide products that have been shown to help. Each package includes an Extra Emollient Night Cream and Hydrating Lotions, as well as a note of encouragement.

“If I can put my thoughts and concentration somewhere else, it takes my mind out of the current situation that I’m in,” Smith told WDSU. “With this breast being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it really makes me want to go out there and do more; do all that I can to help put a smile on somebody’s face.”

Smith will be donating the care packages to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, where Walker is currently receiving her chemo.

Smith is taking donations and says to contact her at smith.shondra@icloud.com if you are interested in helping out in any way.
