Shannen Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March of 2015. Though she has since beaten the disease, she continues to be candid about her emotions during treatment.
The world has witnessed her raw fear and her uncertainty, her hope for the future, and her relief and joy at becoming cancer-free.
During chemotherapy, Doherty faced a side effect that so many patients go through: hair loss. Panicked, she ran to her mom, crying, and told her she wanted to cut off her hair as soon as possible.
So Mom grabbed some scissors and cut off Doherty’s ponytail.
She didn’t stop there. With the help of loved ones, she continued on snipping her strands, and posted the photos on her Instagram account.
“I just — I didn’t want somebody to take a picture of me coming out of the grocery store and be like, ‘Oh, god, look at her,'” Doherty said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I wanted to put it out there the way that it felt the best for me to put it out there. And also, if I could help one person, then it makes me go, ‘Oh, okay, I–I–It’s easier to live with having cancer if I know I’m helping at least one person.”
We love how open Doherty has been about her journey, and we appreciate how real she’s been about such a tough, life-changing experience.
