Veronica Avila was just six years old when she went to the doctor and found out she had bone cancer. She’d been playing soccer and was hit by the ball, but she was taken to the doctor when the injury proved extremely painful.
As she went through rounds of treatment, she watched The Ellen Show, and Veronica said that watching Ellen made her happy during the tough days of treatment. So Veronica wrote to Ellen to tell her how she liked the show and that she hoped to meet Ellen one day.
Ellen, as you may have guessed, made it happen. She invited Veronica and her family out to the show and gave them VIP seats. Then Ellen surprised Veronica by inviting her up on stage. Veronica shared her story and said that when she found out she had cancer, she didn’t really understand what was going on, but she knew it was scary. Now, thankfully, Veronica is in remission.
Veronica, now 11 years old, shared that she now wants to be a surgeon someday so that she can help children in similar situations. Ellen thought that was a great idea and had some special gifts planned to help Veronica pursue her dreams. We love these heartwarming stories—thank you, Ellen!
