As women get older, their risk of developing breast cancer increases. One in eight or 12 percent will be diagnosed in their lifetime. But according to USA Today, some cancer researches believe there is a way to lower your chance of getting non-hereditary forms of the disease.
The majority of breast cancer caused by family genes comes from one of two mutations called BRCA1 and BRCA2. It is believed that cancer not connected to those genes result from lifestyle choices. Anne McTiernan of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center says exercise and weight loss can regulate insulin and estrogen biomarkers.
For example, up to three-quarters of breast cancer occurs in women after they reach menopause. McTiernan says obesity is one of the causes because it raises the amount of estrogen in the body, which increases risk.
"The greatest benefits for breast cancer reduction come from weight control and physical activity together," McTiernan told the source.
According to National Cancer Institutes, exercising four or more hours a week may help lower hormone levels and decrease chances of developing breast cancer. This especially applies to premenopausal women who are already at a low to normal weight.Whizzco
