The Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign began in 1994 and has since raised almost $50 million for research. FTBC works in conjunction with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to encourage awareness and support for a variety of research groups. Fashion designers create looks to sell and FTBC donates 30 percent of the proceeds.
Ralph Lauren designed the original name and target symbol for FTBC. The 2014 merchandise consists of a T-shirt, phone case and bracelet, each of which features a two-tone blue target. Additionally, many stores will feature their own line of clothing to support the cause. For example, Top Shop and Laura Ashley have their own FTBC line and 30 percent of the proceeds will go toward Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a group that funds cancer research in the U.K.
FTBC not only campaigns in the States, it has become an international effort. Singer Emeli Sande, Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill and model Laura Bailey are participating in the U.K. campaign and have starred in a recent photo shoot. Emeli Sande feels strongly about the effort as one of her close friends passed away after fighting the disease.
''I'm taking part in this year's campaign in memory of my friend Narcisse; wear your support and help make a difference in the fight against this terrible disease," Sande told Contact Music.Whizzco
