Theatres to Screen ‘Grease’ to Benefit Breast Cancer Research in Memory of Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton-John, who recently died following a 30-year battle with breast cancer, was an advocate for other patients. A theater chain is helping continue that spirit with screenings of her most popular film.

AMC Theatres has announced that they’ll be featuring Grease at select theaters as part of their $5 Fan Faves promotion. From each ticket, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the cause that was near to Newton-John’s heart.

In a tweet, CEO Adam Aron said, “To honor the late Olivia Newton-John: many of our U.S. theatres this weekend will show her classic 1978 hit movie Grease, again on the big screen. An inexpensive $5 admission price, and through our charity AMC Cares we will donate $1 per sold ticket to breast cancer research.”

Newton-John, who was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, used her experience to help others dealing with the same diagnosis. In addition to being open about her journey with the disease, she helped launch several resources for patients.

Her husband John Easterling highlighted this when he shared the news of her death on social media, writing, “Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer.”

She launched the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, as well, which treats cancer, conducts clinical trials and research, and focuses on patients’ wellbeing.

She was also known for sharing her journey as a metastatic breast cancer thriver, giving interviews on the topic. Among them was an interview in which she spoke about making the most of her time after her stage IV diagnosis, saying, “It was consuming my day, and after some time I went, ‘You know what? I don’t know what my time is, but I need to enjoy my life, so I’m gonna eat a cookie if I want it, and I’m gonna have a cup of tea if I want it, and if I want to have a little bit of wine, then I’m gonna do that.'”

It isn’t clear how long the promotion will last, but if you’d like to attend one of the screenings to help benefit breast cancer research, you can search here to see the closest participating theatre.
