In our darkest hours we draw strength and inspiration from all kinds of places.
Like many 3-year-olds, Hyrum Harris of Woodstock, Georgia loves Disney’s “Moana.” Ever since he started watching the movie multiple times a day, he’s developed a new saying: “I strong!” It’s perfect because he and his family need all the strength they can get.
Hyrum is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and he has Down syndrome, which makes his health journey even more difficult. As such, he spends his time in and out of hospitals. Thankfully, he’s managed to find a constant source of comfort in “Moana.”
His favorite character is Maui, who inspired Hyrum’s wonderful catchphrase in the first place. So his parents reached out to Maui’s voice actor, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to see if he would help them encourage their little fighter. And Johnson did just that, posting a special video message on Instagram for the toddler!
“This little boy is one of the coolest little boys around, and he’s certainly one of the strongest because he is a fighter. Right now, this little boy is in the fight of his life. His name is Hyrum Harris. Hello, Hyrum! I hope this message gets to you. You don’t know me. My name is Dwayne Johnson, I also go by The Rock. And you’re probably thinking, ‘Of course you go by the name of The Rock because you have a head the size of a rock!”
The touching message continues for almost three minutes and includes a few lines from “You’re Welcome,” Maui’s hit song. It concludes with Johnson saying, “I’m a big fan of Maui too, and I’m a big fan of yours. Thanks for inspiring everyone around you, including myself. Stay strong, Hyrum!”
April, Hyrum’s mom, said her son was “watching intently” throughout the recording and pointed at himself every time his name was mentioned. He knew Johnson meant every word just for him! And, of course, when the Maui sound-alike started singing, Hyrum couldn’t resist joining in!
This meant the world not only to Hyrum, but also to the entire Harris family. After the sweet video went viral, they started receiving encouragement from strangers all around the world.
“We were all touched that night and continue to be astonished and amazed at the outpouring of love and support my little fighter is receiving,” April said. “The prayers matter. They carry us through when our days are rough and our nights are too short.”
It’s so important to help others, and Johnson always seems to know the perfect thing to say during times like these. We are all rooting for you, Hyrum! You are just as strong as Maui — and then some!
