IORT – A Breast Cancer Treatment Option
Toni was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago and had a lumpectomy. Then, last year, it came back. It was recommended that she get another lumpectomy followed by radiation. After remembering a commercial she had seen on TV, Toni decided to explore the option of IORT (Intraoperative Radiation Therapy).
What is IORT? Well, normally, radiation after lumpectomy requires six weeks of radiation therapy, given five days a week, right after the surgery. IORT combines both into one trip: immediately following tumor removal, the affected area is treated with radiation, a process which takes 30 minutes. Then after that, further radiation is typically not needed.
