Lifestyle Choices and Breast Cancer

When people are diagnosed with beast cancer they often reevaluate their lifestyles, wondering if poor eating habits or lack of exercise may have played a role in why they now have the disease. Although these factors are not the sole cause of the disease, they can change the effectiveness of your immune system and treatment methods. There are some positive lifestyle changes that you can make to increase your overall health.

Healthy eating
According to the University of California San Francisco Women's Health Center, a plant-based diet is best for lowering the risk of breast cancer. The ideal healthy plate should contain about 50 percent vegetables, 25 percent protein and 25 percent whole grain. Eating a diet that is low in fat, and processed or refined sugar, flour and grain is also recommended, along with staying hydrated. Look for fruits and vegetables with vivid color because they contain the most nutrients. Cooking veggies will reduce the amount of nutrients that you gain from eating them. Enjoy them raw to get their full benefits.

According to the National Cancer Institute, women who exercise at least four hours a week lower their risk of breast cancer. This may be most effective in women who have not undergone menopause. The American Cancer Society and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that cancer survivors exercise moderately for 150 minutes and partake in two or more strength-training sessions or work out intensely for 75 minutes weekly to lessen the likelihood that their cancer will come back.

If you do not have the time or money to go to the gym, any exercise is recommended, from taking frequent walks to following YouTube workout tutorials at home. Some exercise is better than none. Proper diet and exercise also prevents weight gain and can help to reduce the amount of insulin and growth factor-1in your body?. High levels of these substances have been linked to breast cancer.
