First Time Mom To Birth Baby Twice In 14 Weeks

As a first-time mom, giving birth can bring a slew of emotions.

It’s exciting, scary, and unpredictable. But it’s something that you just have to do once and then your baby is in your arms (if all goes well).

But one first-time mom had a less than typical experience after being told by doctors she’d have to give birth twice in the span of 14 weeks.

Jacqueline Schumer shared a TikTok video where she explains how she has to birth her baby and then put her back in her uterus and birth her again. Needless to say, it’s sparked a lot of questions.

“When you find out you have to birth your 23 week [gestational age] baby so she can get spinal surgery, then put her back in your body to grow her for another 14 weeks until she’s born again,” she wrote in the video.

She added in the caption that she then has to be on bed rest for 107 in another state. “I’d do anything for her,” she wrote.

Schumer’s baby needed surgery because of an early spina bifida diagnosis. According to the Children’s Hospital of Philedelphia, spina bifida is a birth defect where an area of the spinal column doesn’t form properly. It affects an estimated 1 per 2,000 live births in the United States each year.

Spina bifida is serious and can cause damage to a baby’s nervous system, sometimes leading to paralysis.

Schumer shared in the comments of her video that if her baby “didn’t have fetal surgery she would need it at 1 day old but would have more damage.”

She explained in a follow-up video that the surgery was performed a few weeks ago and she’s now 30 weeks pregnant and hoping to carry to term.

She wrote in the comments, “They removed my uterus to do the surgery on her but opened the uterus and amniotic sac, but the baby stayed in uterus and they put it back!” They replaced the amniotic fluid with some kind of saline solution before putting the baby back.

@jacqschumer Reply to @sophaloaf93 explaining this the best that I can! My fluid levels are back to normal and baby is doing great! #fetalsurgery #spinabifida #pregnancy #nicubaby ♬ original sound – Jacqueline Schumer
