My Journey – One Day at a Time

My name is Shari. I am 48 years old and I have breast cancer. I was diagnosed on Nov. 17, 2011. I had a lumpectomy on Dec. 20, 2011. When the results came back I was told the margins were dirty and two of three lymph nodes tested positive. I had a second surgery on Feb. 14, 2012. Happy Valentines day. Ha! Those results were still not good. My doctor said this time I needed a mastectomy. I was not given a choice. I had a total mastectomy on March 9th with five more lymph nodes removed. When those results came back, my doctor said we made the right decision as the breast was loaded with small nodules full of cancer, and two more lymph nodes tested positive. I was surprised by the findings. Not for one minute did I think my cancer was this bad. I have been diagnosed with HER2+ breast cancer at stage IIa, high grade.

I had a routine mammogram on Sep. 23, 2011 and this is when the lump was found. It is now April 12, 2012 and I am finally getting ready to start my treatments. I have been told that I will need aggressive chemo followed by radiation and a year of herceptin. I see my chemo doctor next week for my first consultation. I am scared of what lies ahead for me. I have been married to the man of my dreams for almost 5 years. It is a second marriage for both of us. We have a total of four children ranging in ages from 16 to 23 years old. I am truly blessed to have my family and a ton of friends with me for love and support at this time. I just want my life back…
