The Penn State Lady Lions women’s basketball team made an impact in the fight against breast cancer July 2 as it announced the results of its eighth annual Pink Zone Game, which benefits ongoing research against and care for breast cancer. In 2014, the event raised $310,000 to be donated to various charities, research organizations and treatment centers. The beneficiaries included Mount Nittany medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital. The Lady Lions exceeded their stated fundraising goal of $300,000 by $10,000.

The team played it’s Pink Zone Game on February 16, 2014 when the Lady Lions hosted the University of Wisconsin. The event drew the sixth largest crowd in the history of the Bryce Jordan Center, and the Lady Lions won 78-68. Better still, they did so in front of a crowd of 12,585 fans, including 698 breast cancer survivors. This year’s fundraising effort brought the collective total of Pink Zone donations into the seven figure range, now totaling $1,135,317.73. Head Coach Coquese Washington expressed her gratitude at being a part of the charity event.

“The Pink Zone at Penn State has such a huge impact, not just in our community, but regionally and nationally,” Washington said in a statement. “We are so proud to be a leader in the women’s basketball community and in this fight against breast cancer.”
