Pottery Barn Just Released A New Furniture Collection For People With Disabilities

Most people don’t give much thought to what is necessary for an individual with disabilities to lead a normal life.

That is, of course, unless they have to deal with it themselves or have a loved one that is in a similar situation.

Many of the things that we take for granted are difficult for those with mobility issues, from the height of the sink to the lower shelf. That has been a problem for many years, but now Pottery Barn is doing what it can to help rectify it. Check out their tweet below:

This is happening, thanks to a new furniture collection that was recently launched by Pottery Barn. They built accessibility into the furniture collection and it is sure to be a help to anyone living with disabilities, including the handicapped, elderly, and injured.

Pottery Barn didn’t want to remake the wheel in order to do this. They took 150 of their best-selling styles and created them with easier access for those who have mobility issues. The Disability Education and Advocacy Network got involved to help guide the designers so that everything would be acceptable.

Thanks to these updates, individuals who need these modifications can now remain stylish with their furniture choices. This was brought out nicely by the president of Pottery Barn, Marta Benson.

According to FAST Company, Benson said: “We wanted to adapt our vernacular, our beautiful reclaimed-wood finishes, to these products. You shouldn’t have to compromise design to have this functionality.”

There were many different things that were adjusted on the popular pieces to make them accessible. This includes utilizing tilting mirrors, armchairs that also tilt and move, and adding easier-to-reach storage.

Although many people are applauding the fact that Pottery Barn took this initiative, it does come at a significant cost. Many individuals who are disabled will not be able to afford the furniture but hopefully, other designers will follow suit and come up with some affordable options.
