Fighting the Fear & Winning

My story starts in December 1982, when I was a 37 year-old mother of five and found a lump on my right breast. I went to the doctor to have it checked and the doctor immediately ordered a biopsy.

Before the biopsy my doctor said that he was sure it was cancer and wanted to know if I wanted the mastectomy as soon as it was confirmed, or whether I wanted to take time to think about it after the procedure. I said “NO just remove the breast if it’s cancer.” Well as the story goes it was cancer and I did have the mastectomy and some lymph nodes removed for testing. Then I was treated with Tamoxifen. The lymph nodes were all clear, thank God.

Five years later, in 1987, I found a lump on my left breast and became very frightened. I went back to my doctor, who believed it was a completely new cancer. We arranged for a biopsy and lumpectomy. The next week they removed several cancerous lumps and lymph nodes. My lymph nodes were all clear, and I was treated with radiation for five weeks and Tamoxifen. I was so happy I didn’t need a mastectomy.

Five years later, the lumps showed up again. This time I had to have a mastectomy and chemo. Then thirteen years I found another lump on my right breast which was treated with radiation.

(We at Support the Fight Against Breast Cancer salute Jackie and her courage. Jackie, you’re an inspiration! Never give up, and keep doing those self breast exams!)
