Redskins Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness GameThe Breast Cancer Site
On Oct. 6, the Washington Redskins hosted their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game against the Seattle Seahawks at FedExField. It was the 16th annual awareness game. Team owner Dan Snyder’s wife Tanya founded the tradition in 1999 to spread awareness to Redskins fans with the hopes that it would catch on with other NFL teams.
Tanya is a breast cancer survivor and founded WOW, the Women of Washington Redskins, the team’s official fan club geared toward women. The club calls its breast cancer awareness campaign, THINK-PINK!, and refers to early detection as “Making the Crucial Catch.” The campaign promotes breast self exams and mammograms to detect breast cancer early. WOW partnered up with Washington Area Toyota dealers who will donate $50 to the American Cancer Society for every catch the Redskins make on the field this season.
The team will sport pink accessories during the October games from cleats and gloves to compression sleeves and decals. Referees and team coaches will also be wearing pink. Many of these pink items will be auctioned off at the end of the month, and the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society’s Community Health Advocates National Grants for Empowerment Program.
At the game on Oct. 6, Zeta Tau Alpha members, also involved in WOW, handed out THINK-PINK! ribbons and educational materials about breast cancer awareness.
“As long as there’s still breast cancer on this earth, there is a need for us making a difference and speaking out about it,” Snyder said in an interview on the Redskin’s website.
