Sharee and Annette have been through everything together. Seriously — everything. Raised in Utah, these two sisters shared a bedroom, went to the same college, and even worked at the same company together! Now the sisters are sharing an experience that’s a bit more sobering: a breast cancer diagnosis.
When Annette was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in March of 2016, the news pushed Sharee to get screened. Incredibly, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer, by the same doctor, within weeks of her sister; Sharee had stage II. Both sisters underwent genetic testing and found out they had the BRCA2 gene mutation, which increases a person’s risk of both breast and ovarian cancers. They both began treatments.
At the time this video was posted, Annette and Sharee were both going through chemo at the same time. Annette had a bit of a head start, and their father shaved her head after she began chemo. Then, 15 days after Sharee started chemo, Annette had the honor of shaving her little sister’s head.
Annette and Sharee seem to share a positive, lighthearted approach to their treatment and how it’s impacted their lives, and Sharee is constantly giggling and cracking jokes. For example, in the video below, Sharee says, “So the exciting part of this is, is that I have a, um — I don’t know if you’d call it a date? — but an evening with a gentleman this afternoon. So this’ll be really fun to show up with a bald head! Last time he saw me I had hair. So this is exciting. I hope men like women with bald heads!”
Everyone has to deal with their diagnosis in a way that works for them. These two ladies have clearly found a way to find humor in the madness, and we can’t get enough of it!
