Soccer players in Fort Wayne, Indiana want to put their athletic skills to good use by helping the fight against breast cancer. To do so, the Fort Wayne United Futbol Club has scheduled a tournament on May 3 and 4 that will raise money for the Vera Bradley Foundation. According to the News-Sentinel, all participating teams will don pink for the event in order to raise awareness of breast cancer. They will also compete to raise more money than the other teams in the tournament. The field's corners will be marked with pink flags.
"We're delighted to partner with Fort Wayne United FC to raise funds for breast cancer research," Catherine Hill, of the Vera Bradley Foundation, said in a statement. "Our family of committed partners is growing and we love their help in spreading the word about the important work of the Vera Bradley Foundation."
Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Patricia Miller, cofounders of Vera Bradley (the company was named after Baekgaard's mother Barbara Bradley), wanted to remember their friend and coworker who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mary Sloan lost her battle in the early 1990s, but her memory lives on through the Vera Bradley Foundation, which donates a portion of the proceeds from the Vera Bradley company to cancer research.Whizzco
