Though the Boston Avon Walk for Breast Cancer doesn't start until May 17, a local coed softball organization held a tournament to begin fundraising. According to the Daily Times, the The Amateur Softball Association hosted the Cancer Coed Softball Tournament over the weekend of April 27.
The Homers for Hooters team took first place in the tournament, beating the Meat Militia 12-7 in the final game. One player managed a three-run homer to seal the victory. The winning team was made up of Tyler Penhallow, Becky and Jon Unangst, Cory Landes, Valerie Beatrice, Mike Trivino, Kelsey Whiteman, Sean Bradley and Dan Martin.
The tournament raised $1,100 for the Turkeys Trotters group, a team of locals who will participate in the walk. Other charity events in the area, such as an ice cream social, also helped bring in money for the group's fundraising efforts.
The Boston Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a two-day event in which participants begin their journey near University of Massachusetts. From there, they hike north along the Boston Harbor, then head west and south. The committee for the walk organized "the Sweep Team," a group of people who help participants along the route.Whizzco
