Student Raises Money for Breast Cancer Awareness
Chase Anthony is a unique 10-year-old boy. According to the Virginian-Pilot, he helped raise money for a local animal shelter when his family’s dog died. More recently, Chase wanted to do something for his teacher who was dealing with breast cancer.
“For my 10th birthday, I am going to raise money for breast cancer awareness,” Chase wrote according to the source. “Last year my third grade teacher, Mrs. Dreelin, [got] breast cancer so I am trying to help her and others fight breast cancer.”
Instead of birthday presents he wanted his friends and family members to give the monetary equivalent of the gifts to a breast cancer organization that is working toward a cure for the disease. Chase’s $300 goal quickly turned into more than $5,000 when people from Strawbridge Elementary School became involved. The fifth-grader’s efforts also caught the attention of a local breast cancer awareness organization that named him Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the year.
Unfortunately, his teacher passed away last year in December about a month after Chase started gathering donations. However, the student continues to organize events for breast cancer organizations through the name Chase-ing 4 A Cure.
