Engineering Students Build New Classmate A Robotic Hand
The first thing parents often look for when a child is born is if they have all of their fingers and toes. The baby typically meets their expectations, but sometimes things don’t work out as expected.
That was the case for Sergio Peralta. He was born with a hand that didn’t form fully, and it made him self-conscious.
When Sergio moved to a new location at 15 years of age, he was nervous about students seeing his hand. In speaking with CBS news, he said: “In the first days of school, I honestly felt like hiding my hand. Like nobody would ever find out.”
Eventually, the students found out, but a teacher also heard about it. That teacher was the lead in the engineering program at the school, and he wanted to have his students do something special.
The students offered to build him a prosthetic hand. Sergio had never expected anything like it, “never in a million years.”
It took a little work, but the students were able to put together a hand that functioned well. They used online models and a 3-D printer, and in the end, they had something totally unexpected.
According to CBS News, Sergio said that it changed his life, and we can only imagine. Not only does he have a new hand, but it also looks like he has some new friends as well.
