Teen Girl Cares for Mother With Breast Cancer
For many people, the most challenging thing they ever had to face in their teenage years was was saying “hello” to their crush, but that’s not the case for some. According to the Newark Advocate, Sydnie McDowell is a high school junior who has been caring for her mother since 2012. Melanie McDowell, now 45, was diagnosed with breast cancer and has gone through radiation, chemotherapy and six surgeries – her seventh is scheduled for April 16. Throughout the last two years, Sydnie has been her mother’s primary caregiver.
“This little girl right here has done a ton,” McDowell told the source. “She’s gone through a lot in the past few years … I’m so blessed to have her.”
McDowell had M1/N1 cancer, meaning it spread to other parts of her body though it was only stage 1. She is now in remission and hopes the next surgery will be the final one in a long treatment process.
McDowell is a single mother who has been on disability for fibromyalgia since 2003, so the pair has faced financial hardship. Her friends are planning a potluck dinner and auction to raise money for the family. It’s scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 13. McDowell would like to fix their van, which has frequent issues, and stock their fridge.
