Teen Gives Up Homecoming Crown To Comfort Girl Who’d Lost Mom To Cancer Hours Before

In an act of selflessness, a Brooklyn, Mississippi homecoming queen gave away her crown to help comfort a grieving student who’d just lost her mom to cancer.

Nyla Covington and Brittany Walters were both nominated for homecoming queen their senior years. However, it was Covington that won the title and the coveted crown that goes along with it.

But in a sweet turn of events, Covington removed the crown from her head just moments after receiving it and placed it on Brittany’s head – a senior who’d lost her mother just hours before homecoming began.

A family friend of the Walters, Tyra Willamor Idom, shared about the sweet moment on Facebook, explaining that Brittany’s mom, AJ, had tasked her with helping get Brittany ready for homecoming.

AJ was battling appendix cancer and didn’t want to miss out on the big event, but didn’t have the energy to do things for her daughter herself. Tyra was more than happy to step up, and they found a gown, got pictures, and did all of the prep before homecoming.

Tyra even arranged to have AJ brought to homecoming to cheer her daughter on one last time – but sadly, she passed away before that could happen.

Knowing how much AJ had wanted Brittany to go to homecoming, she and dad, Sean, decided to go and make the most of it in AJ’s honor. Brittany had been nominated for queen and, according to a local news station, Brittany had promised her mom she’d go and see the event through no matter what.

At homecoming, the queen was announced and the title went to Brittany’s classmate, Nyla Covington. Nyla knew what Brittany was going through and that she’d just lost her mom. That’s what prompted her to give up her crown.

In an interview with CNN, Nyla said, “It was really just for her, to bring up her day a little bit, and she’d rather have her mom than a crown… but the point was, I was telling her that she was her mom’s queen and I was just letting her know that she was loved by many and especially me.”
