Here’s How to Thoughtfully and Responsibly Give Treats to Your Kids

Treats are the sweetest part of our childhood memories!

From chocolates and candies to ice cream, doughnuts, and cupcakes, our senses get filled with happiness as we relish each creamy bite. And, of course, since we now have families of our own, we want our kids to enjoy the same experiences. At the same time, we are now more aware of the importance of nutrition and a balanced diet.

So, how can we make treats “sweeter” and more meaningful?

You’ll love these tips from Rocher Ferrero’s Thoughtful Treating initiative as shared by Helen Bond, a consultant dietitian, on Mumsnet:

  1. Don’t be too strict with treats. Treats are not just for birthdays and holidays. Let your kids enjoy treats from time to time even without a special occasion. Let an ordinary day become special to your children by giving them treats out of love. That way, you will also prevent overconsumption when you offer them treats.
  2. Hide the treats to avoid kids’ temptation to eat them frequently. When treats are out of sight, your kids will not be thinking about them. And when you think it’s time to give them treats, you can turn it into a surprise. Your kids will be very delighted and it’s an experience that they’ll always remember about your family.

  4. Treats should not be given as rewards for good behavior or a way to appease a child. You may be tempted to use treats in instilling good behavior in your child. Or maybe to stop your child’s tantrum. But these can inculcate wrong attitudes and points of view. Treats for kids are for family bonding time.
  5. Right treating moments. Planning is the key to giving treats to your kids at the best time. Don’t wait for school breaks or when someone else will be taking care of your children. Treating moments will be more memorable with preparation.

  7. Make treats part of your family’s balanced diet by serving them in small portions. When shopping, choose treats that are small and individually wrapped. This way, your kids will learn about moderation. Or you can also serve treats on a plate, but make sure that the portion is just right. It is also important to read the label so you’ll know how many calories a treat contains.

So go and keep enjoying treats with your kids! Make them a part of your family’s bonding time and healthy diet through proper planning and moderation.
