Hero Uber Driver Donates Kidney To Passenger In Need

When Bill Sumiel called an Uber to drive him the 30 minutes from his doctor’s appointment to his home, he had no idea that his life was about to change for the better.

According to ABC6, 71-year-old Bill Sumiel was at a dialysis center in Neward, Delaware in Ocoter 2021 when 33-year-old Tim Letts pulled up in an Uber to take him home.

During the 30-minute drive, Letts learned that Sumiel had been in desperate need of a kidney transplant for the past 3 years. The two were chatting and getting to know one another, but Sumiel never suspected it could turn into something more.

Speaking with the news outlet, Sumiel recalled how partway through the drive home, Letts turned to Sumiel and offered to donate him a kidney. Sumiel said: “[Lett’s said], ‘If you’ll take my name and number, I’ll give a kidney to you.’ I was shaking so hard I couldn’t even write down his name and number.”

Amazingly, Letts followed through on his promise and donated a kidney to Sumiel, allowing him to live a healthy life once again.

Sumiel called the gift a miracle, saying: “Giving a kidney is the gift of life and I feel so fortunate to have that gift. I can almost live my life back to normal. I know miracles have happened in the past. Maybe they never happened to me, maybe they have. But now I really have those beliefs reinforced.”

Sumiel and Letts regularly keep in touch and will likely be friends for the rest of their lives.
