A man from Crystal Lake, Illinois is Dad Of The Year, after helping his four-year-old daughter feel like she isn’t alone after undergoing three open-heart surgeries.
Matt Backe got a tattoo on his chest that looks identical to the scar his daughter, Everly, has from her surgeries.
Everly was born with a critical congenital heart defect that forced her to undergo her first open-heart surgery at just three days old, and two more before she was even a year old.
She now has a scar on her chest, which her family refers to as a “zipper,” because it will have to be opened again when she undergoes heart surgeries in the future.
Everly always asks questions about her scar, so Backe decided to get a replica of it tattooed on him, so that they could be “zipper buddies,” and so she wouldn’t feel so alone.
A local tattoo artist used a picture of Everly’s tattoo and was able to recreate her scar on Backe’s chest.
“He didn’t want me to be alone,” Everly said. “He wanted to be special like me.”
Backe inspired his wife, Lauren, to get a tattoo as well. She now has a tattoo of EKG lines, which show a heart rate, next to her kid’s initials.
Their ten-year-old son, Jack, also wants to get a matching scar tattoo to support his sister when he turns 18.
